Frequently Asked Questions About Becoming a Foster Parent
How long does it take to be certified as a foster parent?
The certification process typically takes 3-5 months to complete. This timeframe depends on your individual pace in completing the in-person and online training, background checks, documentation, and 3 home visits. We work with you to complete this process efficiently and at your desired pace.
How soon after being certified will I be able to foster a child?
Once completing certification, you are eligible to receive a foster child placement in your home starting that day. This timing depends on the needs of children entering foster care and the preferences you have for your home. Our Child Placing Specialist will call you when we receive a foster youth that fits into your home best.
What happens if I am unable or unwilling to take a child who needs foster care?
When we contact you about a foster child potentially needing a placement, you have the right to accept or decline the placement. We provide you with as much information about the child that we know at that time and discuss whether it would be a good fit for the child and your family.
How long will a foster child stay in my home?
Each child’s time in foster care varies and more than likely depends on their goal to reunify with their biological family. A child can be in your care for less than a week while awaiting news from a court case, or they can be in care for years. Unless a child is seeking adoption, we prepare our foster parents for any amount of time with a placement.
Will I have contact with my foster child’s birth parents?
A foster youth can have a set visitation and communication schedule with their biological parents. It is important as foster parents to support this relationship and the child’s journey. This may look like driving them to weekly visitation or assisting with scheduled video calls. Communication remains primarily between the social worker and the parents.
